With reference to paragraph 3 of your
Despatch No. 443 of the 24th. December last, I have the honour
to inform you that on Mr. Curwen's first appointment to the
Post Office he was chiefly employed in keeping the books in
the Money Order Office, and also performed the principal part
of the duties of the Deputy Superintendent while that Officer
was acting as Superintendent. On this matter I have to refer
you to paragraph 8 of Sir William J. Gascoigne's Despatch No.
79 of the 8th. May, 1902.

I have now to inform you, however, that
I have provisionally and subject to your approval appointed
Mr. Curwen to be English Master of the Anglo-Chinese School
Sterling at Yaumati under the Education Department, at a salary of
£270 a year rising by triennial increments of £30 to £360,
but with no other allowances and without free quarters. This
arrangement enables the fulfilment of the promise made to
Mr. Ho Tung referred to in paragraph 6 of the Despatch above
quoted.
